Cooking with Alison

About

I love introducing people to new foods, recipes, and cooking techniques. Through this food blog, I’ve been able to share what I know, learn more in the process, and meet other food-obsessed people! I’ve been maintaining this blog since January 15, 2010. As of 2016, I started providing social media coverage to restaurants and food events as well! See a list of my sponsored events here. So be sure to Follow me on Social Media!

Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Pinterest (details here).

If you’re looking for Toronto (and Greater Toronto Area) restaurant recommendations, check out my restaurant reviews on Zomato.com.

When I’m not blogging about food, I spread awareness about brain injury through my self-help column, Mind Yourself with Alison, on the Brain Injury Society of Toronto (BIST) blog.

About The Recipes:

  • I have a electric ceramic stovetop so you may need to adjust the heat and cook times accordingly.
  • I cook foods from all cultures and I keep my dishes as authentic and traditional as possible.
  • I love making things from scratch to avoid processed foods.
  • A lot of my recipes are freezer friendly.  Look for the instructions at the end of the recipes.
  • Many of my recipes (especially the Asian ones) happen to be gluten-free as indicated in the tags.
  • Vegan and vegetarian recipes are also indicated in the tags.
  • Every now and then, I become obsessed with finding the “best” recipe for something.  This results in hours spent on research, recipe testing, and new favourite recipes being posted.

About Me:

Love and appreciation of good food has been passed down for generations from both sides of my family. So naturally, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t eating or aspiring to be a good cook. Unfortunately, I’m from a family of eaters, not cooks, so I’m self taught (and always learning).  I grew up in different cultures and most of my culinary influences come from Hong Kong (and southern China), Malaysia, Korea, and North America. I am Chinese, born and raised in Canada; my dad was born and raised in Brunei where the cuisine is very similar to that of Malaysia; and my mother has lived in both southern China and Hong Kong.

With several busy years in school, I didn’t get my chance in the kitchen until I started working full time in October 2006. Since I prefer salty and spicy foods over sweets, I didn’t start baking until early 2009, but I’ve been making up for lost time ever since. In case you wanted to know more about me:

  1. I’m a crazy dog lady, wife, fun aunt, eldest sister, traveler, and volunteer.
  2. I’m an honest, understanding, fun-loving, detail-oriented, and obsessive person that loves to try new things.
  3. I love to shop, but I’m money-conscious, so I’m all about getting the best deals. My favourite stores include: CostcoSephoraHudson’s Bay, and J. Crew.
  4. I have no plans to have human children, but I would love to be a foster mom to children when I’m older. I’m currently a foster mom to rescue dogs.
  5. I have a M.Sc., a PMP, and an office job in the pharmaceutical industry, and I still don’t know what I want to do with my life.

  6. Hey Chef Foo! Sorry it took so long to make it here, and I gotta confess, I haven’t really read much of the blog. But from the extensive choice of recipes etc…looks like someone’s got tons of time on their hands!! Wanna make me food every weekend so I don’t have to cook?? j/k of course.

  8. Luv ur blog. I subscribed the RSS in my Google Reader. So, keep blogging recipes. Thx.

  9. BTW, do you have a flickr account? Have a look at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ricepot/ You can also upload all the food pics with recipes to flickr, it will be more convenient and the things will never be lost

    • Thanks for sharing that link. The picture of Hainan chicken rice made me really hungry 🙂 My grandfather was from Hainan so I always love it when I “meet” people that know of it 🙂

  10. Hi there, great site. Do you know anywhere in Kingston that serves good Korean food?

    • Hi Shyloo, thanks so much for your comment! Unfortunately, the Korean food in Kingston really isn’t great. Ed’s family used to go to Ta-Ke Sushi (on Princess St) for their Korean food items, but the food’s just okay. On a side note, they recently added Korean pork bone soup to their menu. If you find good Korean food in Kingston, please share! Good luck and I’m sorry I wasn’t more helpful!

  12. Hi Allison

I love your article. Have you perfected the miso cod from nobu yet? I’ve only had the opportunity to try morimotos version. Attempted to make it and failed miserably. I hope egg tarts are on your list of things to try.

Look toward to you next food adventure.

    • Hi Lilly,

Thank you so much for your comment! I have not had a chance to try the miso cod from nobu yet 😦 Difficult to get fresh fish where I live and I’ve been very busy. I’m sorry to hear that the Morimoto cod recipe didn’t work for you!

Egg tarts are definitely on my list of things to try 🙂 Just have no idea when I’ll have time to do it. There are usually two types of crust…. a puff pastry type and a shortbread type… which one do you prefer?

Thank you again for writing to me 🙂 Hope you have a great day!

  13. Hello dear you!
Thank you sooo very much for the delicious wedding cake! The flowers were beautiful and smelled so good!
Can’t wait to see you again!

  14. Just found your page randomly looking for a traditional chinese dish my mom normally cooks for us. This is great because I now live on my own and the thing I miss most about living with my folks is the food!! I’ll be using your recipes a lot!! I’ll probably show my sisters this as well.

    Thanks from Ottawa!

  15. Hi Alison,Thank you very much for your recipe for the braised brisket (ngow lam). This is
the first time I have attempted to cook this dish and found it very tasty and tender like the
restaurants. This a favorite dish of my family and they will be sampling it soon. Cheers
    Thanks from Melbourne,Australia

  16. I just found your blog on YouTube when searching on how to wrap Joongs. I noticed your recipe for your Gramma’s recipe is no longer active. Are you still willing to share this recipe?

    • Hi Melanie! I absolutely plan to share! The link isn’t active because I haven’t finished writing the recipe. My new job is a lot more demanding and so I haven’t been able to find as much time as I would like to cook or write! Please check back over the next few months! Good luck with your joong making!!!

  17. Hi Alison, really good work, I will check your site every week.

    • Hi Uncle Kenny!!! I am SO honoured that you looked at my food blog and posted a comment!!! My cooking is not nearly as good as yours!!! Love you lots and thanks again for posting a comment 🙂

  18. You are a dishonest bully who uses false pretences to obtain what you selfishly want in life. I feel sorry for your husband but thankfully you will not have children; Markham has been spared. Hopefully, your brain injury makes you a better human since you were incredibly mean in the past to so many people. Have you had the good sense to stop frequently binge drinking since you were an terribly nasty drunk? Then again perhaps the excessive drinking caused your injury.

    • Hi! I’m really confused by your comment, because I can’t recall a time where I was maliciously dishonest or bullying others. However, it sounds like I did something in the past that really hurt you. I’d really like to understand what happened from your perspective, because if I did do something wrong, intentionally or not, I want to apologize and try to make amends.
