Favourite Broccoli Salad Recipe

In Soups and Salads on July 2, 2012 at am

I don’t actually like broccoli, but I really like this salad.  Everyone that has ever tried it has loved it.  In fact, I made it for my dad’s packed lunch recently, and he said that it was the best salad he has ever had.  It’s perfect for bbqs, pot lucks, and picnics, because you can make it in advance.

Favourite Broccoli Salad Recipe

makes 4 small servings, adapted from here

1 large head of broccoli, green florets only

10 slices naturally smoked bacon

1/3 cup raisins or sultanas

1/3 cup sunflower seeds (already shelled) or toasted pine nuts

1/6 cup (or more to taste) finely minced red onion

1 cup mayonnaise  (Note:  I prefer the brand Hellman’s)

3 tbsp white wine vinegar

1 to 2 tbsp granulated white sugar (to taste, depending on the sweetness of your vinegar)

ground black pepper

Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium or medium high heat until crispy.  Break it up into small pieces and set aside.  Cut the broccoli into very small florets and place them in a large bowl with the red onion and raisins or sultanas.  In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar and sugar, and then whisk in the mayonnaise and a pinch of ground black pepper.  Pour the sauce onto the broccoli mixture and toss until well combined.  Refrigerate over night.  Just prior to serving, toss in the bacon and sunflower seeds or pine nuts.

  1. I love that salad too! I have an inexplicable hatred for raisins, so I always make it with dried cranberries instead, but the rest of it is pretty much the same : )

  2. Florets only? Sheesh. I think the money end of the stem is the best part, sliced thin. Does this mean I’m outta the club? Up against the wall? Great recipe, this one.

    • haha Yes you could definitely use the stems sliced thinly too 🙂 I’m pretty sure the original recipe did that too! But I personally don’t like the broccoli stems 🙂 Thanks for your comment!
