John loves deep fried chicken with waffles. I love deep fried chicken, probably more than any other food in the world, and I like eating waffles every now and then for dessert, but I didn’t like them in combination until I made mini chicken (soft bones) and waffles drizzled with maple syrup. These one-bite hors d’oeuvres make sense to me, because they are easier to eat than the regular sized version, they have the perfect ratio of meat to waffle, they have a great balance of sweet and savoury, and the waffles stay crispy for longer. I was inspired to make these when I spotted Eggo Minis at the grocery store. I usually try to avoid processed foods, but I couldn’t help myself. They’re adorable! Top them with tiny scoops of ice cream (use a melon baller), chocolate or strawberry sauce, and toppings (e.g. mini oreos, crushed nuts, whipped cream, sprinkles) and you’ve got an even more adorable dessert. [Confession: When I first started living on my own, I would eat Eggos for dinner. I’ve eaten a LOT of Eggos in my lifetime. Looks like I’ll be picking up where I left off. ;)]

Mini Chicken and Waffles Hors D’Oeuvres

In Appetizers, Hors D'oeuvres, Snacks, Main Course, Other Dishes, Reviews, Sides and Sauces on July 21, 2011 at amA few of Ed’s friends stopped by in Kingston for lunch one day. We only had two hours notice, but that was enough time to put a menu together, run out and get groceries, and host a miniature BBQ. Luckily, I had some miniature frozen strawberry pies in the freezer. (See the menu and recipes below.) I love miniature food (see my miniature food display here) and I think it’s a great way to entertain, especially if you’re serving a light meal or throwing a baby shower. I love that this was all finger food and cutlery was only required for the dessert. A review of some of President’s Choice’s new summer 2011 products is also provided below.
Miniature Food Display
In DIY and Crafts on March 17, 2010 at pmFor my sister’s birthday one year, I enrolled us in a Beginner’s Miniature Food Display Course where you learn to use specific clays and dyes to make miniature fake food. In the course that we picked, we learned how to make a miniature black forest cake and miniature dim sum (bbq pork buns, siu mai and ha gow in a bamboo steamer). We had a great time and if you search for “miniature food” on http://www.youtube.com, you’ll see some amazing things that other people have done.
Note that the black forest cake is sitting on a miniature doile 🙂 and the cake box is even smaller than the bamboo basket.
